In The Encounter, Laura confronts a benefactor of the exhibit, Paul Simmons. Both are married, but not to one another. The story's undertones are of Laura's unhappy life. She is trapped in a bad marriage and in a disappointing life. She has drunk too much wine during the evening. She is empathetic, with a concealed delicate and vulnerable nature protected by alcohol.
